The intention of this blog is to bring awareness to the almost forgotten media of American theatrical radio. To bring something old and new, in this technological age, to those who pass by and take the opportunity to listen to a media that has seen better days in the United States.

Of all of the programs, genre’s, styles and series, I have chosen one simple theme that truly showcases the talents, fun, and entertainment they provide: Halloween.

Beginning October 1, 2009 until Halloween, I will post one show per day in celebration of the season, as well as the entertainment these timeless performances provide.

Enjoy.

Day 3: Lum and Abner...

My grandpa used to tell me about Lum and Abner all the time.  I would make him CDs of their shows for him to listen to, but I never really got into them too much.  This past Christmas I actually sat down and listened to one of their holiday episodes and could see why my grandpa liked them so much.

The show featured the adventures of two small town shop keepers in the Town of Pine Ridge Arkansas.  Lum and Abner was broadcast from 1931 until 1954 and starred Chester Lauck who played Columbus "Lum" Edwards) and Norris Goff (Abner Peabody).

This Halloween episode is short in duration, but it quickly displays the simplicity an sud humor that made Lum and Abner such a successful program.

Here, Lum, who is dressed up as a ghost, shows up at Abner's place to see if he is going to go to the local Halloween Party.  Abner, however, has other plans...to catch and arrest the young kids engaging in the 'tricks' of 'trick or treating.'

Lum is quick to acknowledge the hypocrisy of Abner's evening plans, and shares with him memories of past Halloween's where Abner took part in far-worse (yet fun) pranks.  Soon, the two are reminiscing about Halloween times of year's past.
