The intention of this blog is to bring awareness to the almost forgotten media of American theatrical radio. To bring something old and new, in this technological age, to those who pass by and take the opportunity to listen to a media that has seen better days in the United States.

Of all of the programs, genre’s, styles and series, I have chosen one simple theme that truly showcases the talents, fun, and entertainment they provide: Halloween.

Beginning October 1, 2009 until Halloween, I will post one show per day in celebration of the season, as well as the entertainment these timeless performances provide.

Enjoy.

Day 7: Jack Benny...

The Jack Benny Program is one of my favorite old time radio shows, and I just recently discovered a Halloween program that I did not have in my collection and that I have never heard before...and it's a good one!

Jack gets a telegram from Andy Devine, inviting him to a Halloween Barn Party. Jack drives the gang out to visit Andy's farm in his new Maxwell as this marks the first time the Maxwell is actually heard on the program (it would continue as a running gag).

When the car's engine started on the program, the listening audience heard the rich asthmatic, wheezing and clinking mechanical sounds of an ancient automobile engine that was reluctant to start.

Mel Blanc, (a.k.a. "the Man with a Thousand Voices"). first supplied the engine noises when the sound technician's machine failed on the air. Blanc's "P-tui, p-tui, b-lit, b-lit, p-tui" sputtering and chattering saved the skit. Jack Benny loved his impersonation of a rattletrap, coughing engine so much that he replaced the sound technicians with the talents of Mel Blanc.

This episode also features such running gags such as Benny's cheapness, his Phil Harris feud, and others. We are also treated to a song by Mary Livingstone as she sings, "Have You Got Any Castles?" and she's joined by the rest of the cast. Jack even plays a chorus on his violin!

Stars:
Jack Benny, Mary Livingstone (Mrs. Jack Benny), others
Sponsors: Jell-O
Networks: CBS, NBC
Aired: 1932-1955
Type of Show: Comedy/Variety
Show Trivia: Mel Blanc resurrected the sounds of his sputtering Maxwell auto when he performed the voice of a remote-control vehicle that talked to three adventurous teenagers on the animated cartoon SPEED BUGGY/CBS/1973-74.
