The intention of this blog is to bring awareness to the almost forgotten media of American theatrical radio. To bring something old and new, in this technological age, to those who pass by and take the opportunity to listen to a media that has seen better days in the United States.

Of all of the programs, genre’s, styles and series, I have chosen one simple theme that truly showcases the talents, fun, and entertainment they provide: Halloween.

Beginning October 1, 2009 until Halloween, I will post one show per day in celebration of the season, as well as the entertainment these timeless performances provide.

Enjoy.

Day 2: Father Knows Best...

Today the first of two Halloween episodes of Father Knows Best is featured. The series began August 25, 1949, on NBC Radio. Set in the Midwest, it starred Robert Young as General Insurance agent Jim Anderson. His wife Margaret was first portrayed by June Whitley and later by Jean Vander Pyl. The Anderson children were Betty (Rhoda Williams), Bud (Ted Donaldson) and Kathy (Norma Jean Nillson).

In this episode, the Anderson family is gathered around the breakfast table, telling what each member of the family will be doing to celebrate Halloween. With his children asking for money to buy costumes and planning nights of mischief, Jim (who knows best) decides he doesn't want his kids engaging in such activities. He reminisces about Halloween's spent together as a family.

When Betty's plans are canceled when her friend gets the measles, Jim decides to host a Halloween party at the house, with each child able to invite two friends. Jim's plans of 'good, old-fashion fun with good, old-fashioned refreshments,' turns into a night with many more guests, many more problems, and costs much more money than Jim had bargained for.

Unfortunately for Jim, the trouble doesn't end there!
