Spade, like most of the detective programs on radio featuring a key character as a private eye, was of the hard-boiled type. He was the classic hard-boiled detective: ruthless, making no moral claims, but not without scruples, yet without sentiment for criminals. Sam Spade could not be bribed even though he appeared to be low enough to accept a bribe. However, he was not opposed to the occasional bonus which might not be totally on the up-and-up. Yet he was without pity for crime.
Private Detective Sam Spade is hired to provide security at a ritzy Halloween Party. San Francisco's always had its characters, but on this fairly bright evening, Sam meets a bona fide witch searching for fennel. The witch was hired for Mr. Bright's party, and seems fairly sweet, as far as hags go, but this does not auger well for the rest of the evening as a night of Halloween fun turns serious when one of the guests is murdered. With a rich attorney and a witch among the suspects, can Sam Spade solve the case?
