The intention of this blog is to bring awareness to the almost forgotten media of American theatrical radio. To bring something old and new, in this technological age, to those who pass by and take the opportunity to listen to a media that has seen better days in the United States.

Of all of the programs, genre’s, styles and series, I have chosen one simple theme that truly showcases the talents, fun, and entertainment they provide: Halloween.

Beginning October 1, 2009 until Halloween, I will post one show per day in celebration of the season, as well as the entertainment these timeless performances provide.

Enjoy.

Day 4: Jack Benny...

I love Jack Benny's television show, and his old time radio holiday shows are truly something special.

In this particular episode, Jack Benny is trick-or-treating with a local boys club called The Beavers. Jack serves as treasurer of this group and treats the boys with many tall tales of his accomplishments.

This episode has a very simple story: Jack goes trick-or-treating and visits his friends along the way. We’re treated to appearances from Mary Livingstone, Don
Wilson, Dennis Day,

Several of the program’s running jokes are all here…such as Benny's age, Day's stupidity, Benny’s cheapness, Don’s weight...not a one missed. We are also presented with a song by Dennis Day and a visit from a special guest, Mr. Kitzel.

One of the most entertaining segments comes later in the episode when Benny and the gang sing a spooky song featuring their sponsor, Lucky Strike. The groups talent is on full display, and you can easily hear the joy and fun they have when performing.

Original air date: November 2, 1952.
Sponsor: Lucky Strike Cigarettes
Networks: CBS, NBC (Blue), NBC (Red)
Aired: 1932-1955
Type of Show: Comedy/Variety
Series Trivia: Jack's will arranged for flowers, specifically a single long-stemmed red rose, to be delivered to his widowed wife, Mary Livingstone, every day for the rest of her life.
