The intention of this blog is to bring awareness to the almost forgotten media of American theatrical radio. To bring something old and new, in this technological age, to those who pass by and take the opportunity to listen to a media that has seen better days in the United States.

Of all of the programs, genre’s, styles and series, I have chosen one simple theme that truly showcases the talents, fun, and entertainment they provide: Halloween.

Beginning October 1, 2009 until Halloween, I will post one show per day in celebration of the season, as well as the entertainment these timeless performances provide.

Enjoy.

Day 1: The Aldridge Family...

I had only limited exposure to old time radio episodes of The Aldridge Family, and that was basically not much more than their Christmas episodes.  In a lot of ways, this series was a lot like many others.  There's a boy, Henry Aldridge, who with a small group of friends gets into schemes and troubles, many times by accident.

While the concept is a basic on, it works.  There is a simplicity to the series and the actors do a good job of dishing out the humor.

In this particular episode, it's Halloween  night, and Henry and his best pal, Toby, are thinking about fun, free ways to spend the evening.  Since they have spent all of their allowance prior to the holiday, parties, dances, and costumes are not an option.  So after persuading Henry's parents, the two set-out for a classic trick: Chinese knock knock.

With their excitement and energy high, the two set out to perform their prank on the local old grump.  However, that old grump has already had his fill of Halloween pranks, and Henry and Toby end up for a long night with several unexpected tricks, with no treats.

A good, lighthearted episode that offers the expected, yet fun.  The Aldridge Family delivers some classic Halloween laughs that truly represents how the holiday was celebrated during a time long ago.
